In the article below, I have described our stay in Harpers Ferry with a small background history.
For this section I have included some of the beautiful and interesting people that I came across on my journey through the winding uphill streets on a very hot day.
The lower part of town, from the 1850's is preserved by the The National Park Service. Robert Harper bought and started to establish a settlement here in 1761.
We meandered through many buildings, and spoke with a number of people (as there are no guided tours, everything is carried out as it would have been in the 1800's).
The upper part of town is the "historic district", and it is chock full of very individualistic shops, that are period inspired.
From General Stores to books to watch shops and confectioners, bakeries and clothing stores, the town has everything you could want.
The shop owners and soldiers walk through town and conduct business as it actually was well over a century ago...
If you are planning to come to Harpers Ferry, it is a wonderful (and fun) way to spend a long week end or just a day. For information on B&B's I have included a link below.
